Short Division Strategy

There are two ways of solving a division question. The first way is using long division (for an explanation of how to long division, look up D-M-S Loop on this blog).

The short division method is similar to long division but we are using mental math to do some of the steps in your head. The 'subtraction' part is being down in our heads

Short Division example below: 

1) 6 into 25 = 4
2) 1 left over, draw it in front of the 3
3) 6 into 13 = 2
4) 1 left over, draw it in front of the 2
5) 6 x 2 = 12, No remainder!

Sometimes the "divided into" symbol is written upside-down to show that we are doing short division. In our text book it is written like this:
