Welcome to Grade 4&5 - Room 208
We’ve had a great start to the new school year. Everyone’s settling into their new routines. I’d like to take this opportunity to say “Welcome!” to all our students and parents.
Please take a moment to review a few of our classroom routines:
CLASS BLOG:
All of this information is available on our classroom blog. Please check it routinely at:
rvroom208.blogspot.ca
HEALTH & SAFETY:
We have students at school who have severe NUT allergies. Please keep this in mind when your child is packing his or her lunch and snacks.
AGENDAS:
The agenda’s are our primary means of communication. Students will communicate day to day information in the agenda. Reminders of any HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS will be noted here. Please be sure to check and initial your child’s agenda every night.
Also please feel free to write and let us know of any exciting events that happen at home or any other information you wish to relay.
If you know your child is going to be away please also note that in the agenda. It is extremely helpful to us and greatly appreciated!
FORMS TO BE SIGNED:
A package of multi-colored has been sent home with your child. These forms need to be filled out and returned to school as soon as possible. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!
PHYS. ED. (Day 2 & 3) & Km CLUB (Fall & Spring):
All of our students participate in Physical Education three times a week (Days 1, 2, and 4)
On days, we don’t have gym class, we still spend a Ministry mandated 20 minutes of “Daily Physical Activity”.
For the next few weeks students will also be participating in Kilometer Club. This is usually run at AM recess. Km Club will be run again in the Spring.
It is important for students to have running shoes and appropriate active wear for school everyday.
MUSIC (Day 1 & 2): with Mr. Ireland
We have Music twice a week. All our students have band instruments. Please make sure Instrument forms have been signed and returned. Students are highly encouraged to sign out their instruments to practise at home frequently.

Author Presentation: Mike Ulmer Visits Rouge Valley
Rouge Valley was privileged to have author Mike Ulmer visit usj today.
Here is a little blurb from his blog, that Mike wrote about himself:
"I have had the greatest jobs. I have written nine books including M is for Maple, the best-selling alphabet book in Canadian publishing history. I have covered the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors and interviewed some of the greatest athletes in the world. Over the course of more than 100 school visits I have met thousands of students who shared with me their love of Canada. I love working with students to help them become even better writers." (Mike Ulmer --mikeulmer.blogspot.com)
Today, Mike entertained us with stories about Canadian hero, Terry Fox and the hockey legend, Maurice "The Rocket" Richard. Mike also taught us how to become great writers. He explained to us his writing process which is embodied in the three letters I.P.E. (I write Perfect English):
"I" stands for "Ideas", which can come from anything and anywhere, including interviews, life experiences, siblings, parents, hobbies and interests.
"P" stands for "Plan". As you begin writing, you need a plan. You can plan out your story with a story board. Sometimes you can write out your idea in one sentence so that you remember the 'point' of your story and not get lost along the way with too many details. Then you can add details as you continue to develop the story.
"E" stands for "Editing". Editing and editing and editing... shows your readers how much you care. Check for mistakes, information errors and spelling errors. Check to make sure what you write makes sense. Check to make sure what you write, says what you want it to say! No story is ever finished on the first draft!
Mike wrote a blog about his visit to Rouge Valley. It can be found here:
